LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION 2026

Local government in Oxfordshire is changing

Oxfordshire County Council runs major services like education, adult and children’s social care, waste disposal and transport. The district and city councils look after housing, planning and waste collection.

Local government reorganisation will make it easier for residents to know where to go for help by replacing this confusing two-tier system with a simpler, more efficient council structure. Three proposals are being considered by the government – a brand new unitary council or councils that would deliver all services.

It’s a big job so as things move forward, we’ll keep you updated on what’s happening, how you can get involved and what it means for Oxfordshire’s communities.
